I am going to do an experiment eating only basic foods, and then only acidic foods to see if a basic ph fixes the problem and an acidic ph makes it worse. I am also wondering if having an acidic ph could be the reason this happens since your body does produce saliva as a defense against acidity right before throwing up (in normal throwing up situations). When I don't take any medication at all I seem to have had better luck. I have noticed a correlation to getting this problem after taking acetaminophen, which happens to be in most cold medicines. Getting a cold is bad enough, but no sleep for 3 days and spitting/throwing up make it so much worse. I have this same issue the first couple days every time I get a cold, and everyone I talk to has no idea what i'm talking about. Whatever you try, just realize that if you keep spitting you just make it continue because you keep stimulating those glands! I recently saw the preview for Legion (the one with the old lady) and it scared the saliva right back in :) If you don't have a scary movie on hand then get on youtube and find something scary. Another good reset button is to get scared. Taking a shower is a good reset button, and you can also try the suggestion made earlier about letting the water hit your throat. Also, sometime the body just needs a reset button. I found that if I relax my mouth (and jaw) completely - even to the point of just letting the saliva flow - I can get it to ease up after a minute or so. I have the problem right now, that's how I found this site lol. I you swallow a lot then you are stimulating the saliva glands so after awhile they don't even close up they just stay open. I always thought it happened because when you have a cold, the excessive mucas makes you swallow a lot. Vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv-I HAVE A SUGGESTION-vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv Also, when I swallow so often, I also swallow air which makes me burp - which, in turn, makes more saliva. I've learned over time that if I don't spit it out, I end up swallowing so much saliva that it irritates my stomach and I vomit. and it is, at the very least, very validating to know that I'm not the only one dealing with this frustrating thing. Whenever I get a cold, the worst part is the excessive saliva production. Have any of you had success with finding an answer out there? Any suggestions are so very much appreciated - this has gone on for years for me and this is the first time I've actually been successful in finding anything out there in the ether. My doctor was completely ambivalent and unhelpful. I usually just end up suffering through a few sleepless awful nights until the worst of the cold passes. I suck on menthol cough drops, which helps some, but not much. I have to a) keep it away from my curious toddler and b) be extra careful not to confuse it with my water glass that I have to continuously drink from so I don't get dehydrated! It doesn't stop at night, either. So, for the duration of my cold, I have a spit cup that I spit into every 15-20 seconds or so - it's absolutely ridiculous. Whenever I get a cold, the worst part is the excessive saliva production.
